The notion of capital has enjoyed a rich career in the social sciences, its use across a range of subjects and in diverse academic and professional contexts having served to establish its conceptual status as 'given'. With particular attention to human and social capital - including cultural capital - this book traces the roots of this theoretical and conceptual trend to economics, revealing the proliferation of various forms of capital to be based upon an encroachment of the conceptual apparatus of economics into other social sciences. Offering an in-depth, critical analysis of the concepts of human and social capital, as well as their surrounding theories, Anti-Capital: Human, Social and Cultural proposes an alternative theoretical framework, whilst better explaining the realities that they mask in economic terms. A rigorous exploration of the most popular forms of 'capital' in the contemporary social sciences, this book will be of interest to scholars and students of sociology, political and social theory, demography and economics.

This book argues that the plethora of new genres, apps and services in digital personal media must be understood historically and sociologically, and insists that sociology, media and communication theory can provide insight beyond surveys on media use and effects. It introduces key terms like 'personal media', 'personalisation' and the 'lifeworld' in order to embed current media use in a proper historical context and theoretical framework. Theorists like McLuhan, Goffman, Habermas, Luhmann, Bauman, de Certeau and Foucault are discussed to indicate the formative power of personal media in daily life.

Social isolation is a deprivation of social connectedness. It is a crucial aspect that continues to be named by people as a core impediment for achieving well-being and as a relevant factor for understanding poverty. The notion of social isolation has been discussed within a diversity of theories that have provided rich insights into particular aspects of social isolation. However, there is no agreement on the core components of this social malady or on how to measure it. Although the challenge of conceptualising and measuring social connectedness is daunting, this paper argues that existing research in several fields provides solid ground for a common concept and for the construction of basic internationally comparable indicators that measure specific aspects of social isolation. In particular, this paper aims to contribute to the debate on social connectedness and its measurement in three ways: (1) presenting a working definition that, while doing justice to the rich insights advanced by different theories, stresses relational features in the life experience of people; (2) emphasising the relevance of isolation for poverty analysis; and (3) proposing some indicators to measure social connectedness that could be feasibly incorporated into a multi-topic household survey.

“The real nature of man is the totality of social relations” (Marx 1963: 83). All individuals dwell in a network of social relationships. Their health conditions can be contingent on structural attributes of their network contexts. Since Durkheim’s classic study on suicide ([1897] 1951), there has been a long research tradition on diverse aspects of social relationships and health in sociology and other social sciences (for reviews see Berkman et al. 2000; House et al. 1988; Pescosolido and Levy 2002; Smith and Christakis 2008; Song et al. 2011; Umberson and Montez 2010). In the last two decades social capital has grown into one of the most popular but controversial relationship-based theoretical tools in the multidisciplinary health literature.

How can democracy be learned? And how successful are we at teaching and learning it? This book does three things: First, it explains why civic education is important for the growth and survival of (any type of) democracy. Second, it focuses on a particular country, which is in many ways representative for the general problems of post-communist transition to democracy. It carefully examines the practical reality of civic education in Romania both at the level of general schooling and in higher education. Emphasis lies on the ways in which the ideals of civic education clash with post-communist realities and on the obstacles that continue to exist in this transition country to the democratic empowerment of citizens through education. Scarcity of resources, corruption in many forms, and attitudes of deference to authority, among other problems, perpetuate a situation in which education fails to support democratization and instead reflects the failures of regimes of the past. Third, the book offers concrete recommendations for how civic education in Romania (and elsewhere) can be improved. How can education be organized to successfully support the realization of democratic ideals? This book is based on its main author's direct experience working in the field of civic education in Romania between 1999 and 2005 and draws on her wider expertise in the study of Romanian political economy and the country's European integration as well as in the fields of political psychology and democratic theory. It is of particular interest for teachers and social scientists willing to reflect on the implications of their teaching or research for democratic empowerment, for policymakers and activists who seek tosupport processes of democratization, as well as for students of post-communist transition countries in general and of Romania in particular.

Purpose – The purpose of this chapter is to argue that utility maximisation, taken from a narrow economic understanding of rationality, frames contemporary business school pedagogy and management theory. The chapter will illustrate this observation by detailing the rational framing assumptions in social capital literature. The chapter will argue that these framing rational notions foster a perspective that inclines towards excessive self-interest as well as a concomitant lack of fellow feeling or morality. Methodology – Literature review of Social Capital theory. Findings – The chapter demonstrates that the narrow economic understanding of rationality that predominates as the framing notion in management theory tends towards amorality as it privileges individual self-interest. In consequence, the significance of ethics and cooperation are under-reported and under-emphasised which leads to Corporate Social Irresponsibility (CSI). These observations are discussed with reference to social capital theory. Research implications – To consider the significance of the under-acknowledged rational background or framing perspectives in distorting theory and empirical research in social capital literature, and more generally in contemporary management literatures and business school pedagogy. Social implication – There is a need to re-examine and challenge the validity and application of rational notions in contemporary management literatures and pedagogy. Originality – The chapter identifies that a narrow utility maximising understanding of rationality frames and therefore inhibits current management literatures and pedagogy, including social capital literature.

The MBA is still viewed as an essential tool for achieving greater career success. It's an expensive investment, both in time and money, for which graduates seek a quick return, only to be disappointed that the MBA does very little to improve their options after graduation. Even the top tier programs fail to provide a "how to" manual for using the MBA, leaving students and graduates the daunting task of figuring it out for themselves.

The MBA Guide To Networking explains how graduates can use the MBA to seek out new opportunities among audiences such as:
* Alumni groups
* Your current organization
* Professional Associations
* On-line and more.

The MBA is a great asset for building more success but doesn't bridge the gap to opportunity. Networking is the key to gaining the access to the opportunities, after graduation and throughout your whole career. The faster you learn to network, the faster you can rise up the ranks.

This is the 3rd book in the Henry Series for MBAs. Previously released titles include The Joy Of An MBA and The MBA Value Proposition.

Social Capital in Action Thematic Policy Studies
To investigate the potential of social capital as a public policy tool, the Policy Research Initiative launched an interdepartmental project to assess the potential role and contribution of social capital in the achievement of federal policy objectives. In the spring of 2004, the PRI and federal departmental partners commissioned a series of thematic policy studies. These federal partners include Canadian Heritage, Health Canada, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada, Social Development Canada, and Veterans Affairs Canada. The resultant studies have been collected and published in this volume, which complements the other two final products of the PRI’s social capital project: a final project report and a guide to measurement.

This collection deals with the landscapes and places of rural, urban, and wilderness areas in relation development. Contributions examine the complex relationship that human beings maintain with their rural and urban environments and with other species in various places and spaces. Nothing is taken for granted: colonial history, globaliation, localiation, hybrid relationships, colonial or "shared"architecture, religious backgrounds, and claims to equal access all fuse with policy strategies. This volume discusses these issues within the framework of developmental discourse, while asserting the rights of access to the global commons for all world citiens as well as other species.

Nightclub: bouncers, risk, and the spectacle of consumption

In the last thirty years bouncers have emerged as iconic gatekeepers of contemporary cool, exclusivity, and social capital in urban centres around the world. In this groundbreaking empirical study, Rigakos critiques the supposed liberating and expressive potential of nightclubs by theorizing them within the linked themes of risk, consumption and security in late capitalism.People attend nightclubs to be seen and see others, to consume others as aesthetic objects of desire and to elicit desire in others - the desire to be desired. This 'synoptic frenzy', according to Rigakos, fuses surveillance and aesthetic consumption. It fetishizes bodies and amplifies social capitals, producing optic violence and crises of respect fuelled by alcohol. At closing time, populations flow out of the haze of the nightclub and onto city streets, from private spectacle to public nuissance. Mirroring the general late capitalist compulsion to binge and purge, the nightclub's spectacle of consumption produces a litany of unfulfilled courtiers of the night, staggering out of one spectacle and immediatley into another.In this sense, bouncers are not only prime policing agents in the nighttime economy but are producers of an urban risk market - a site of circumscribed transgression and consumption that begins at the door.

With an emphasis on social capital, this dissertation analyzes the implementation of policy in response to externalities. The research begins by considering externalities generally before moving on to analyze the policy response to wildfire. The primary research is segmented into three related chapters. First, meta-analysis is used to statistically summarize the literature of Coasean bargaining experiments. This chapter models the probability of an efficient bargain as a function of: (1) measures of transaction costs and related variables, and (2) measures of the social dimensions of a bargain. Results suggest that efficient solutions are more likely when explicit transaction costs do not exist, in the absence of a binding time limit, and when participants have perfect information on payoff schedules. Social dimension variables are found to have the potential to affect bargaining outcomes and are an important avenue for further research. Next, revealed preference analysis is applied to a unique forest management program in New Mexico. The Collaborative Forest Restoration Program includes stakeholders actively in the creation and implementation of management on federal forested lands. Statistical analysis of the funding pattern from the program reveals that developing social capital and maintaining forest health stand out among a set of potentially divergent goals, while implementing projects that span multiple land jurisdictions is argued to be a missed opportunity for developing social capital. Finally, an economics experiment is used to analyze the effectiveness of a set of potential policy tools to induce private spending on wildfire risk-mitigation. While the results suggest the possibility of public spending replacing private spending, a policy prescription that ameliorates this crowding out is identified. A policy response that ties insurance availability to mitigation effort and disseminates information describing each participant's effort to the group is most effective at dampening crowding out. In some instances, the policy tools considered here also show the simultaneous effect of decreasing the level of participant's mitigation spending and increasing the probability that a participant will undertake mitigation. This unanticipated result identifies a conundrum that will need to be addressed in implementing policy.

The book argues that state-building and development are processes that, to function successfully, must be positioned in a complementary interrelationship. This argument has arisen in response to contemporary approaches to state-building and development that are too narrow, so that state-building strategies are often reduced to the establishment of political institutions to the exclusion of other equally necessary structures that include economic, social, and even cultural concerns; in the same sense, development strategies frequently focus on the support and establishment of selected economic structures at the exclusion of political, cultural, and social dimensions.

Social capital is a relatively new concept in the social sciences. In the last twenty or so years it has come to indicate that networks of social relationships represent a 'resource' for both the individual and society, since they provide support for the individual and facilitate collective action. Although this is not an entirely new idea, the more systematic way in which social capital captures such an intuition has created a new theoretical paradigm and helped to develop a series of innovative research programs in politics, economics, and the study of human well-being.

Social capital is not only usefel for the person who owns it, but it may also foster the integration of a society and the stability of a democracy. Friendly relations, social trust and norms of reciprocity ease the living together in a society and encourage people to take part in democratic decision making. This volume examines the differences in levels, causes and consequences of social capital between 22 European countries surveyed in the 2002 European Social Survey. At first glance, social capital differs strongly between countries. Yet the determinants of social capital differ strongly between European people as well. If one takes account of the latter, the former may no longer appear so large. The volume asks whether this is indeed the case so that a similiarity of countries goes along with a diversity of people. To examine this, muliti-level analyses are used in each contribution.

Making rural households’ livelihoods more resilient - The importance of social capital and the underlying social networks
T Dufhues, G Buchenrieder (eds)
The holistic nature of rural development has drawn together very diverse
disciplines. Consequently, the field has no common, clearly applicable theoretical
approach. However, social capital has recently come to be seen as a conceptual
framework that can bridge the divide between academic disciplines. Yet despite
its potential, social capital remains an elusive construct. Moreover, since the
concept of social capital is still in an early stage of development, no uniform
definition is yet generally accepted. Furthermore, many earlier empirical studies
on social capital created a single index for its measurement. However, social
capital is not a homogeneous entity, and utilizing a single index ignores this.
While social networks have been recognized in various approaches as being an
important element of social capital, their measurement has been accorded little
attention to date. The objective of this contribution is to bring more structure into
the conceptual framework of social capital and to contribute to the discussion on
its definition and parametric measurement in the area of rural development in
developing countries. Methodologically, the results are based on an in-depth
literature review of the current state of social capital research.

This book makes a strong and coherent contribution to the discussion of the knowledge economy and of innovation, offering a range of theoretical insights from different disciplinary perspectives. The role of knowledge, knowledge development, and knowledge diffusion is discussed at the micro level of individuals and firms, but also at the level of groups of firms and sectors, as well as at the level of the economy at large.Dolfsma analyses knowledge development and diffusion as a thoroughly social process, depending on communicative structures to support cooperation. The author combines insights from economics and management with perspectives from sociology (network theory), anthropology (gift exchange), social psychology, science studies and information theory (scientometrics), using empirical analyses to demonstrate where knowledge impacts the dynamics of an economy.

Fulfilling Potential, Creating Success examines human capital development from the perspective of several disciplines including education, psychology, sociology, politics, economics, geography, health, and civic engagement. This volume, produced by the Canadian Policy Research Networks (CPRN), the School of Policy Studies at Queen's University (SPS), and Statistics Canada, outlines what each of the disciplines can tell us about human capital development. Contributors explore the value in integrating family, education, and public health policies into a coherent "life course" so that influences at early stages of life have implications for human capital development at later stages. The volume also emphasizes connections between the acquisition of human capital and individual and societal outcomes and the policy implications of these relationships. Topics include the personal and social gains of the acquisition of skills and knowledge such as improved employment prospects, less crime, improved health, greater participation in political activity, more engagement of citizens in their communities, and a more innovative economy.

Annual Review of Information Science and Technology, B Cronin (ed.)
ARIST, published annually since 1966, is a landmark publication within the information science community. It surveys the landscape of information science and technology, providing an analytical, authoritative, and accessible overview of recent trends and significant developments. The range of topics varies considerably, reflecting the dynamism of the discipline and the diversity of theoretical and applied perspectives. While ARIST continues to cover key topics associated with "classical" information science (e.g., bibliometrics, information retrieval), editor Blaise Cronin is selectively expanding its footprint in an effort to connect information science more tightly with cognate academic and professional communities.

It examines the growing debate around the concept of social capital. The concept has been heralded by many as a means of uniting the social sciences, particularly economics and sociology, and of overcoming ideological divisions between left and right. However, critics argue that the concept is poorly theorised and provides little insight. More radical critics have claimed the concept may be a neo-liberal ‘Trojan horse’, a mechanism by which the atomistic thinking of neoclassical economics colonises social theory.

The Development of E-Government in Central and Eastern Europe [CEE], M Vintar (ed)
The aim of this publication is to take an x-ray of CEE e-government and provide readers with an in-depth comparative study of e-government phenomena in the CEE region. The CEE region covers a very diverse set of countries, which have in many respects very little in common, geographically, historically, politically, and economically. Yet there is one common factor; most of these countries are emerging from the hegemony of the Soviet Empire. And, as they do so, more liberal governmental and democratic values are being struggled with. So, although there is much diversity in the region there is a common point of reference and a trajectory of change and development that brings value to a collection of papers on CEE.

Researchers, policy-makers, and students who study grassroots movements will welcome this blueprint for integrating social capital theories into their models. Showing that a public policy that increases social capital is the holy grail of modern governments, this manual explains what social capital is, how it is measured, and how to increase its presence. Using a set of parameters, the guide goes on to show ways that public projects can maximize cooperation and provide real benefits for both the organizers and the general citizenry.

This is the first book on social capital and trust informed by a critical geographical perspective. The authors examine the role of social capital in the constitution and reproduction of urban networks of trust in different places and contexts. They explore how social capital and trust are reflected in the capacity of these networks to achieve their goals and to deliver specific forms of urban development in a number of Finnish and Italian cities. Finland and Italy present, in many ways, two almost paradigmatic cases of how social capital and trust can work in extremely different and yet very effective ways in the production of the urban. They are two almost ideal laboratories for experimenting new definitions and new understandings of the concepts in question.For this reason each chapter emphasizes theoretical work on the key concepts of trust, urban networks and social capital, and explicitly tie these into the institutional structures of different local 'societies'. Each author contends with the importance of place and stresses how the functioning of urban networks necessarily reflects the particular historical, cultural and political contexts of the locality in question.

Many of the articles and discussions in this publication suggest that there is a direct relation between the real participatory power of young people and their readiness to get involved in the political process and public policies. This can mean all sorts of things, such as voting rights from a lower age; learner-centred policies in education and thus real participation in the development of school and higher-education curricula; participation in the creation of public spaces in urban areas and rural development; involvement in ecological programmes and a stronger recognition of the consumer status of young people and hence their contribution to the economy. Politicians tend to overlook this; future elections might be won with the votes of those aged over 60, but what about the real power of
young people? Will it directly correspond to their participation in voting at local, national and European level? Or is a very different pattern of participation evolving: efficient, real, but not reflected in voting procedures? What is the key to understanding the power aspect of the participation of young people in public policies?

Social capital and governance, Frane Adam (ed.).
The book focuses on some key aspects of social capital in the context of civic participation, governance and civil society at both national and European Union (EU) levels. The role of new EU members is particularly stressed. The texts demonstrate how social capital in the form of cooperative norms and actions facilitates the self-organisation of civil society and its internal ability to articulate policy relevant alternative proposals. The efficiency and responsiveness of governance at different local, national, and transnational levels are also addressed.

This paper analyzes the role of social cohesion in economic and institutional development and, broadly, the creation of welfare in Latin America. The paper defines the concept of social cohesion with reference to the notions of social capital and inequality. Using data and literature on Latin America, the paper argues that low interpersonal trust and entrenched inequality interfere with cohesion. The paper develops and introduces an exploratory index of cohesion structured around the definition proposed. Relying on correlations, and with appropriate caveats, the paper uses this index to explore tentative linkages between levels of cohesion and development outcomes. The paper presents evidence of positive linkages among social cohesion and economic growth, investment and innovation capacity, governmental effectiveness, the quality of public policies, and the predictability of the policy environment. Finally, the paper discusses the significance of these findings and some of the policy implications.

Water governance exerts an impact on the socio-politic life of Honduras. For instance, the new legal framework changes institutions. New water organisations are created, and new processes and proceedings are proposed. These times when strategies from developed countries are transferred to developing countries, such as water governance, the need for an evaluation is desirable to disentangle the problems and to look forward at opportunities and find alternatives.

Conseptualising employment and volunteering as two distinct forms of social inclusion, Susanne Strauß analyses their interrelations in Germany and Great Britain. On the basis of household panel data, she answers questions such as: Does job loss lead people to give up their volunteer work? Or do people who have lost their job keep up their voluhteering activities to use them as an alternative source of social recognition? Does volunteering help with finding a new job? By compaing the situation in two different countries, the author stresses that differences in labour market institutions lead to distinct answers. Moreover, the study points to variations with respect to gender, education and the type of volunteering organisations.
